Transformer Model
Transformer is a type of neural network architecture introduced by Vaswani et al. in 2017. It has become one of the most widely used neural network architectures in natural language processing and other fields.
The Transformer model consists of an encoder and a decoder, both made up of multiple layers of attention mechanisms. The encoder takes in a sequence of input embeddings and produces a sequence of hidden states. The decoder takes in the encoder hidden states and produces the output sequence. The attention mechanisms in the Transformer help the model to focus on relevant parts of the input sequence while generating the output sequence.
One of the main advantages of the Transformer is that it can handle variable-length sequences without the need for recurrent connections, which was a common approach in earlier sequence-to-sequence models. The attention mechanisms in the Transformer allow it to capture dependencies between distant tokens within a sequence and directly model relationships between input and output sequences.
An important aspect of the Transformer is the self-attention mechanism, which allows the model to weigh the importance of different parts of the input sequence when computing the representation of each token. Self-attention computes a weighted average of all the input elements, where the weight for each element is determined by a learned scoring function based on the similarity between the query vector and the key vectors.
The self-attention mechanism can be extended to multi-head attention, where the input sequence is projected into different subspaces and self-attention is performed on each subspace separately. This allows the model to capture multiple relationships between input tokens in parallel.
The Transformer has been shown to be highly effective in a wide range of natural language processing tasks, such as machine translation, language modeling, and sentiment analysis.
Example: A common use case of the Transformer is in language translation. The input sequence consisting of tokens in the source language is encoded using the self-attention mechanism in the encoder. The decoder then uses the attention mechanism to generate the output sequence of translated tokens in the target language. The Transformer has achieved state-of-the-art performance in several language translation benchmarks.
