Closing The Final Chapter

I stared at the envelope on the kitchen counter. The final paperwork dissolving a 6-year marriage. What had happened to us? We were so in love, or at least I thought we were.
But over time, things changed. The little frustrations built up until every day became a cold war. I retreated into myself, losing hope and sinking into a sadness I couldn't shake. Now here I am, signing the last pages to close this chapter of my life.
As I pick up the pen with a heavy heart, I think back on better days. Lazy Sundays in bed laughing together. Surprise picnics in the park on sunny afternoons. The nervous excitement when I proposed, and the joy on her face when she said yes.
I glance at my left hand, the pale strip of skin a reminder where a wedding band used to be. Carefully, deliberately, I sign the pages. Our fate now sealed, bound up in legal formalities.
The sadness threatens to overwhelm me again. I take a deep breath. I know there will be hard days ahead. But I owe it to myself to rebuild and start fresh. One step at a time, one day at a time. I close the envelope, say a silent goodbye to what we had, and walk out the door into my new life. This painful chapter may be ending, but the story goes on.
